Life is like a tree.

The roots

The roots are everything we cannot see, yet they are what keep us standing. They are our values, our upbringing, our beliefs, our defining experiences, and all the moments that shaped us without us even realizing it. The deeper the roots, the stronger the tree becomes when storms arrive.

The trunk

The trunk is our vision. It is the direction we choose for our lives. It connects everything we do and brings consistency to our decisions. Some people have a strong trunk because they know where they are going. Others change direction with every new wind and struggle to build something lasting.

The branches

The branches represent the different areas of our lives. Family, friends, health, career, passions, relationships, and spirituality. They reflect the choices we have made over time, the paths we have decided to follow, and where we choose to invest our energy. Every branch grows according to the attention it receives. Some become stronger and larger than others simply because we have chosen to nourish them more than others.

The leaves

The leaves are our sensors. They are what we see, hear, read, experience, and feel. They are our eyes, our ears, our voice, and sometimes even our intuition. Through them, we gather the information, knowledge, and energy that nourish the branches we choose to develop.

The fruits

The fruits are the results. They are the direct outcome of our values, our discipline, our decisions, and what we consume every day. The quality of the fruit always reflects the quality of what we have cultivated.

The quality of the fruit always reflects the quality of what we have cultivated.

Why this matters for entrepreneurs

As entrepreneurs, maintaining a balanced tree is essential. If one branch becomes too heavy or if the roots are weak, the entire tree can collapse. Strong values help us stay grounded during difficult times. A clear vision provides direction. Consistent discipline allows us to nourish the important branches of our lives without neglecting the others.

But we are not trees

Unlike a tree, however, we have a unique advantage.

We can choose what we consume. We can choose the people around us. We can choose the ideas we expose ourselves to. We can even decide which branches deserve more attention during different seasons of our lives.

We can choose what we consume.

So if you are not satisfied with the fruits you are harvesting today, do not only look at the fruits.

Look at your leaves. Look at the branches you are feeding. Question the strength of your trunk. And above all, take care of your roots.

Because when your foundations are strong, your vision is clear, and your energy is invested in the right places, the fruits will eventually follow.
